Named the ‘Cape of Storms’ by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488; the ‘Point’ was treated with respect by sailors for
centuries. By day, it was a navigational landmark and by night, and in fog, it was a menace beset by violent
storms and dangerous rocks that over the centuries littered shipwrecks around the coastline. In 1859 the first
lighthouse was completed; it still stands at 249 metres above sea-level on the highest section of the peak and is
now used as the centralised monitoring point for all the lighthouses on the coast of South Africa. Access to this
historical building is by an exhilarating 3 minute ride in the wheelchair accessible Flying Dutchman funicular
that transfers visitors from the lower station at 127 metres above sea level, to the upper station at 286 metres
above sea level.
Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African
Arguably one of the most well-known mountains in Africa, Table Mountain provides a magnificent backdrop to
cosmopolitan Cape Town and now boasts the accolade of New 7 Wonders of Nature. Famous for the tablecloth
of clouds that pours endlessly down its slopes when the south-easter blows, this is a mountain of many moods
and offers walkers and hikers a range of routes that vary from light strolls to rigorous hikes.
The Conference banquet will be held on the beautiful Nooitgedacht Estate just outside of Stellenbosch.
Nooitgedacht Estate is a 270-hectare estate situated 5km from the Northern fringes of the historic Boland town
of Stellenbosch. Set under 230 year old oaks and sweeping Cape Dutch gables, this 17th Century farm is rich in
history and tradition and surrounded by some of the most famous wine estates in the South African wine
industry. With names the likes of Van der Stel, Cloete, Greef, Baker and Rhodes having all walked through the
H-shaped Manor house front door, it is not hard to see why Nooitgedacht has left its mark on the Winelands
landscape and is one of the most esteemed addresses in the Cape. The Manor House was built in 1774 and
together with Groot Constantia can be seen as one of the most authentic examples of traditional Cape Dutch
architecture in the province. The Estate currently produces a limited number of premium Sauvignon Blanc and
Merlot wines and projects in progress include expanding into sustainable organic farming and the development
of The Nooitgedacht Village, a 25ha mixed-use village set to the north of the Estate.
